Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to make sure they are safe to use. The majority of electrical safety defects can be found by visual examination but others can only be found by testing. However, it is also important to note that some electrical defects cannot be detected through testing alone.
How often to you need to test your electrical appliances?
The frequency of the testing and inspection of your electrical appliances depends on what type of equipment it is and how regularly they are used. A device that used more often will need to be tested more regulary.
Is it a legal requirement to have all my portable electrical appliances tested each year?
It is stated within the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 that any electrical device or appliance which has the potential to cause injury must be maintained in a safe condition, however it does not state how often tests need to be carried out.
MIM NI Ltd can offer PAT testing on all equipment using the most up-to-date technology– our competent electrical engineer will test your equipment, label it accordingly and produce a register of all equipment tested and the next inspection due date.
